E-books Continue Popularity Rise
The printed book is going the way of the dodo bird.
The proportion of Americans 16 and older who have read a printed book this year has dipped five percent to 67 percent since 2011, according to research by the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project.
The poll also found 23 percent of respondents had read an e-book in the past 12 months, up from 16 percent in 2011.
Overall, 75 percent of those polled said they had read a book in any form in 2012.
The increasing popularity of e-book reading is due to the growing popularity of tablets. Pew reported last month that one-third of the 16-and-over population owned a tablet, an e-book reader or both, nearly doubling the 18 percent rate of 2011.
Shopping on Christmas Day? Why Not
Christmas Day is no longer just about traditional activities, it is also about online shopping.
There was a 27 percent jump in online traffic to the top 500 retail sites Christmas Day compared to Dec. 25, 2011, Experian Marketing Service found.
The top retail sites received more than 115.5 million total U.S. visits. In fact, the holiday online retail traffic for the past seven weeks was up 10 percent over last year.
Amazon was the top visited online retailer on Christmas Day with 24.6 million visits. Wal-Mart placed a distant second with 7.35 million visits. Rounding out the top five were Target with 3.59 million visits, BestBuy with 3.43 million visits and Macy’s with 1.94 million visits.
Sears took sixth place with 1.88 million visits, Fandango was seventh with 1.8 million visits, Kohls was eighth with 1.73 million visits, the Apple Store ninth with 1.72 million visits and JC Penney rounded out the top 10 with 1.57 million visits.
App Device Activations Skyrocket Christmas Day
There were a record number of app and device activations on Christmas Day this year. Flurry Analytics is reporting 260,000 more apps were activated on Christmas Day than any other day in history — and the same goes for devices such as tablets and Smartphones with 17.4 million being activated.
Tablets were particularly popular this year over years past.
According to Flurry’s report, the Smartphone to tablet ration is usually 4:1. This year, however, those numbers changed dramatically.
Forty-none percent of activations were with Smartphones and 51 percent of activations came from tablets.
